Marine Platforms Successfully Completes Light Well Intervention for SNEPCO in Bonga Field

Lagos, Nigeria — July 2024 – Marine Platforms, a leading Nigerian-owned oil and gas service provider, has successfully completed a Light Well Intervention (LWI) project for Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) in the Bonga deepwater field. This marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s offshore capabilities and underscores Marine Platforms’ role in advancing cost-effective and innovative subsea solutions in the Gulf of Guinea.
The project, executed in collaboration with Baker Hughes and was delivered efficiently over a 4-month period with zero lost-time injuries (LTI) and targeted seven subsea wells: B-12ST, B-62, B-39STRD, B-73, B-43, B-40, and B-72, all located approximately 120 kilometers offshore in water depths of up to 1,200 meters.
Mobilizing the African Inspiration, Marine Platforms deployed a suite of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) systems and advanced rigless intervention tools provided by Baker Hughes. The campaign focused on boosting reservoir productivity and ensuring long-term well integrity, while minimizing environmental impact and operational downtime.
“This project demonstrates what is possible when local expertise and global technology come together with a shared vision of performance and safety,” said a spokesperson from Marine Platforms.
Key components included the use of hot stab tools, rigless adaptor spools, and subsea trees linked to a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) system. The ROV configurations incorporated high-precision torque tools and dual-port hot stabs, enabling seamless execution of well diagnostics, valve adjustments, and remedial interventions critical to optimizing output.
Throughout the operation, safety remained central. A comprehensive HSE plan was jointly developed with Baker Hughes, covering hazard identification and risk assessments, daily toolbox talks, and biweekly safety audits. Marine Platforms also aligned with Shell’s Design and Engineering Practice standards for Dynamically Positioned vessels. The African Inspiration, certified to DP2 standards, maintained consistent power and operational reliability throughout the campaign.
All equipment underwent system integration testing before deployment. Emergency preparedness was also prioritised, with regular drills including fire response and abandon-ship exercises conducted onboard to ensure readiness in dynamic offshore conditions.
